Tired University

Hey, I go to a university now! This may not seem like a very big deal, I know. But it is, and that's why I'm bothering telling you so.

Well, for me at least. I was pretty sure I would never go back to school. But thanks to lots of support from people around me, I found myself sitting in a classroom this morning at 7:30 am.

So, I don't know how I'm going to do it. I've got 4 classes, and each of them are going to be quite a bit of work. My life is basically going to be comprised of work, school, church, and family. And unfortunately, pretty much in that order. Oh, and the baby is due like right during midterms week, so that'll be interesting.

In other news, Will started soccer last week. It didn't get off to a great start. They were asked to come up with ideas for a team name. His was Robots, or as an adult suggested after hearing his suggestion, Soccerbots. But they picked Extreme Team instead. He was quite sad on the way home, and didn't understand why nobody else thought his idea was cool. Poor kid doesn't understand that he was born to dorks, and that things that dorks think are cool, the rest of the world doesn't. The 2nd practice went a bit better, but they are pretty much nowhere near ready for the first game this Saturday. They haven't scrimaged at all, and so I don't think they (Will at least) will have any idea what to do with out of bounds, and stuff like that. Oh well, we'll see how it goes. If he doesn't want to do it again next year, I won't cry.

And in case we forgot to mention it, Ben pooped the token already. Somehow we missed it, and he didn't feel it, but it wasn't on the last x-ray we took. So that's good.

Evy's doing good. She says lots of words, and is super cute as usual.

Same for Colleen.

What's new?

Last night we got to see our good friend Cuyler, who was visiting CA for a few days. At one point, he asked me what was new. I answered "everything". And the funny thing is, I think it's true.

So let's go over some highlights of this last summer.

1. Will and Ben just finished swim lessons! They had a great time. Neither of them have ever spent very much time in the water, so I think it was really good for them. They're really not very good at stuff yet, but they both loved it. At one point, Will said that swim lessons was tied for his favorite thing to do with playing his DS. If you've talked to Will at all this summer, you'll realize just how big a deal that is.

2. Colleen has a balloon under her shirt. Seriously, I mean this with no disrespect (actually probably lots of respect), but she's getting huge! I can't believe we're having a baby in 2 months!

3. I work a lot! My kids we're getting pretty upset at me any time I had to leave, because I'd been gone so much. That's probably because I let go my assistant right in the middle of summer, when my other assistant was in China. That was a fun couple weeks...

4. Last week we went to the boardwalk - It was really expensive, even though it was single ticket night. But when you factor in parking, hot dogs, tickets, etc, it adds up. But we did have a really good time. The boys loved all the rides. Log ride is definitely their favorite, but we also had fun on the bumper cars, and the carousel. Will was really happy he could reach the rings, and I had fun trying to get it in that clown mouth with him. We also let them stand in line by themselves for one of the kiddie rides. They did really good. Held hands the whole time, handed the guy their tickets, didn't get antsy or anything.

5. Last week we also went to Roseville Golfland, for the big water park. For those that don't know, they have a big water park there like Raging Waters. This was their reward for doing so good in swim lessons. They loved it. They have a lot of good small size waterslides for them to go down, and most of them they could stand up at the bottom. I even took Will on one of the grown-up waterslides. We were in a double innertube, went down a big drop, then around and around in a big toilet bowl kinda thing, then down another little slide at the bottom of the bowl, which we went down backwards, since I'm so much heavier than him. He loved it.

6. I have a new calling now. Well, kinda new. I'm 2nd counsellor in EQ instead of the secretary. But our pres has been in over 3 years now, so...

7. Will started school today! I can't believe the summer is already over. He really didn't want to go last week. But by the weekend he was getting excited, and last night he said he was getting nervous. Once we got there, the nerves were gone. A new kid in our ward is in his class, and they started playing right away. Plus there's like 10 of his good friends from last year in his class (all but 2 of the kids that were at his birthday party). His teacher seems really nice too. So I think he'll have a good year.

8. This week he's starting soccer! He has his first practice on Wednesday, so Colleen took him to get some cleats today. I think he's excited, but with all the school stuff, I don't think he's thought about it too much. He wants his team name to be "The Robots" though.

Will's birthday, softball, temple, nursery

Well, lots of fun things have been going on. Will is now 6 years old! And since I hadn't posted anything about it, I thought I should.

On his actual birthday, I took a half day, and so we got to spend some time together. He opened his presents first thing in the morning. I think we got him some good stuff. A skateboard, an etch a sketch, walkie talkies, Ben got him some legos, stuff like that.

His definite favorite though his new Nintendo DS from grandma and grandpa. Of course, if you have talked to him since that day, you would already know this. He tells everybody he sees about it. Still. Random people in the post office or grocery store, he tells.

We have set up some groundrules. Basically, he doesn't get to take it anywhere so we don't lose it, and so he's not one of those walking zombie kids completely disconnected from the world around them. Also, he just gets it Saturday and Sunday mornings. Many days, one or both kids will wake up once the sun gets too bright, and come in and slide into our bed unbeknowst to us as we are sleeping. However, on Saturdays and Sundays, they just stay up from like 6:30am onward and just play. Then usually once we get out of bed they stop and we eat breakfast and stuff.

Later that day we headed over to Milpitas Golfland to play a round of golf and some games and stuff.

You can see Will has his walkie talkie in his hand.

I stayed and worked while they went somewhere else, maybe home or to a park or something, then for dinner Will got to pick, and so we went to Panda. I love Will.

The next day we had his party. Of course, at Golfland. We went to San Jose, since Will had invited a lot of school friends, and we didn't want to make them drive all the way up to Milpitas. It was a lot of fun! A bit hectic at times, but fun. Will made some good friends this year.

This is one of my favorite pictures. Will's pose is priceless.

This gives a better sense of exactly how many kids and parents we were dealing with. Although I'm sure this doesn't include everybody.

Then, of course, with a ton of guests, you get a ton of presents. Will was happy.

In other news, church softball season has started again, and I'm having a lot of fun. Sometimes I really don't know what the team would do without me and Brian, since we make awesome plays pretty much all the time. Brian's diving for balls in the outfield left and right. We're getting awesome hits. Yesterday I ended the game with a sweet double play. Our normal pitcher was out of town, so I pitched. I'm okay at pitching. I had some good pitches that hit the corners just where I was trying to, which is hard when you're putting a big lob on the ball like that. But anyways, it was the last inning, we were up by like 10 runs, and there was one out, with a guy on first. The batter hits this absolute shot right back at me. I have no idea how I did it, but I instinctively moved my glove to the right place in the split second that it took for the ball to get from home plate back to my gut, and caught it. Every one was so surprised, I don't think the batter even took a step towards first. However, the guy on first had started to run. I turned around and threw to first and the game was over. It was awesome. I felt awesome. I wanted to throw my glove up in the air and let out some sort of exclamation, but I didn't, because I didn't want to make the other team feel bad, cause we kinda killed them. So I just sort of dropped my glove on the ground and walked away awkwardly. I think people thought I took my glove off because I was hurt, but I just didn't know what to do. I had tons of energy running through me, and I didn't feel like I could just stand there. The batter was just really glad I wasn't hurt.

After the softball game, we came home, I showered and then we went to the temple. The Naidu's were kind enough to watch our kids for us up at the temple. They were supposed to watch more, but I guess nobody else came. I felt kind of bad for them, but they seemed okay with it. But it was nice to go to the temple again. Colleen and I hadn't gone since my grandma went through I think, which was over a year ago.

On the way home we went to in-n-out with some friends, which was good. Will got two hamburgers this time, and says he wants 3 next time, because I guess he was still hungry.

And today, Evy is 18 months! So we took her to nursery. Luckily, our ward now has a split nursery, so Colleen doesn't have to teach her. We didn't want to do that, since we didn't want her to get used to having Colleen in there some weeks, because then the weeks when she wasn't would be way harder. So I took her in, held her until she wanted to get down, then stayed a couple more minutes. Then I told her I was going to leave, but be back in 2 minutes. So I went outside and waited 2 minutes, and then went back in. She was fine. Hardly noticed I was gone. So after another couple minutes with her, I told her I was leaving, but I'd be back in 5 minutes. Same deal. So then I told her I'd be back after my class was done. I told the other parents in there (there's a ton, because none of them can just leave their kid and let them cry like they need to) to come get me if she cries for more than 5 minutes. She didn't. Well, towards the end, I guess she got knocked over by one of them olda boys, and started crying. Then when the nurserly leader picked her up, she fell asleep. So she slept for the last 15 minutes or so. But I thought it went really well. Hopefully it'll go just as well next week!

Things have been fun!

Lately, life has been busy, which means life has been life. But it's been lots of fun!

Will just finished up T-Ball, which he misses already. It was a lot of fun being able to help coach his team, and get to spend that time with him. He wasn't the best player on his team, but that's mostly because he was one of the youngest. He's pretty good at batting, though he can't really hit it very far, because the bats are still a bit too heavy for him. At least, his is, and he refused to use any other. His fielding his pretty good. He can shuffle his feet for grounders pretty well. He loved getting game balls, which he got more of than any other kid - 4 (which is awesome, since now bp in the back yard will be so much easier). He got one 2 weeks in a row even. The first because he was having a really hard game. The highlight of which was when he tipped a ball and it hit him right in the face, and even got stuck between his face and the ear cover of his helmet. The next was because he got some good hits, and concentrated really hard on his defence - especially holding his hands up big to make a target for the kids to throw to. Anyways, I'm very proud of how well he did.

He also just finished up Kindergarten! He did so well in school this year. He was one of the more focused students (especially of the boys) and had a great time. He wasn't the smartest, but definitely one of the smarter ones, and also one of the happier ones too. He can read so well now, and his math is great, and I think he knows some things about science that I don't know. It is not uncommon for him to ask me some weird science thing, and I have to have Colleen answer it because I don't know it. We videoed the last day performance, which can be viewed here:

Also, I've been slowly but surely making some improvements at Golfland. There's a lot of things that I would naturally want to do differently, but want to see if the old way works better for the location, but then once I really start to see it in action, I realize that the old way is dumb and my way is better. But the fun things have been stuff like this:
